Why hearing protection matters on UAE work sites

Noise-induced hearing loss is permanent. It is also painless and slow, so most workers only notice it once the damage is done. It often comes with tinnitus, a constant ringing in the ears.

The risk is high in many UAE industries: construction, oil and gas, manufacturing, metal fabrication, airports, ports and warehouses. Daily noise of 85 dB(A) or more means hearing protection should be worn. Tools like hammer drills (around 114 dB) and grinders can damage hearing in minutes.

Good hearing protection does two jobs. It brings noise down to a safe level, and it still lets workers hear alarms, reversing vehicles and their team.

Types of hearing protection we stock

Safety ear muffs cover the whole outer ear with padded cups on an adjustable headband. They are quick to fit, easy for supervisors to check from a distance, and ideal for workers who move in and out of noisy areas.

  • Empiral Solo Light (SNR 32 dB) – lightweight, for long shifts
  • Empiral Solo Xtreme (SNR 33 dB) – our highest attenuation headband muff
  • Empiral Ultra Solo (SNR 32 dB) – steel headband for heavy-duty, daily site use

Helmet-mounted ear muffs clip into the side slots of a safety helmet, so head and hearing protection work as one. They swing away from the ears when not needed. Our models, including the Empiral Cap Solo (SNR 28 dB) and Gladious cap-mounted muffs, fit helmets with universal slots from 3M, MSA, JSP, Bullard, DeWalt and Empiral.

Bluetooth ear muffs combine certified hearing protection with wireless calls and audio. Workers can answer the phone without taking their muffs off, which keeps them protected all shift.

  • OPSMEN C30 (NRR 27 dB) – Bluetooth headset with a 40-hour battery
  • OPSMEN C51 (NRR 24 dB) – ambient sound mode to hear alarms and colleagues
  • OPSMEN C51H (NRR 24 dB) – helmet-mounted Bluetooth version
  • OPSMEN C52 (NRR 28 dB) – adds built-in FM radio

All OPSMEN models are tested to EN 352-1 and EN 352-6.

Ear plugs sit inside the ear canal and seal it. They weigh almost nothing, stay cool in UAE heat and don't clash with safety glasses, respirators or face shields.

  • Disposable foam ear plugs (e.g. 3M 1100) – soft foam that expands to fit; low cost, ideal for visitors and high-turnover sites
  • Corded ear plugs (e.g. 3M 1110) – a cord keeps the pair around the neck between uses, so plugs aren't lost or dropped into food or products
  • Reusable ear plugs – washable and longer lasting for regular users

Hearing protection accessories such as ear plug dispensers, refills and ear cords. Mount a dispenser at the entry to each noisy zone so clean plugs are always on hand.

Ear plugs vs ear muffs

Higher upfront, lasts longer

Best for

All-day wear, hot sites, food plants

Intermittent noise, frequent on/off

In very loud work (above about 105 dB), wear both together for double protection.

How to choose the right SNR rating

SNR (Single Number Rating) is the European measure of how much noise a protector blocks, in decibels. US products use NRR, which is tested differently, so the two numbers aren't directly comparable.

A higher SNR is not always better. If noise at the ear drops below about 70 dB, workers feel cut off. They can miss warning signals and often remove protection to talk, which defeats the purpose. Match the SNR to the noise of the task:

Noise level of the task

Suggested SNR

Typical tasks

85–90 dB(A)

20 or less

Workshops, hand drills, generators at a distance

90–95 dB(A)

20–30

Compressors, circular saws, production lines

95–100 dB(A)

25–35

Grinders, jackhammers, heavy plant

100 dB(A) and above

30 or more

Hammer drills, chainsaws, blasting, airside work

This is a guide only. For low-frequency noise (generators, press shops, plant rooms, boiler houses), get a proper noise assessment before choosing.

How long is safe without protection?

Every 3 dB increase halves the safe exposure time. At 85 dB you have 8 hours; at 100 dB, only 15 minutes.

What else to check before you buy

  • All-day comfort: in hot, humid conditions, plugs or lightweight muffs with soft cushions are more likely to stay on.
  • Fit with other PPE: check that muffs still seal over safety glasses, and that helmet muffs match your helmet's slots.
  • Communication: choose a level that lets workers hear each other without taking protection off.
  • Hygiene: disposable plugs suit shared or dusty sites; muffs and reusable plugs suit assigned users.
  • Beards and long hair: both can break an ear muff seal, so ear plugs may protect better.

How to fit hearing protection correctly

A poor fit can cut protection by more than half. Follow these steps:

  1. Foam ear plugs: roll the plug into a thin, crease-free tube. Pull the top of the ear up and back to open the canal. Insert, then hold for 20–30 seconds while the foam expands. Only a small part should be visible.
  2. Pre-moulded ear plugs: pull the ear up and back, then push the plug in by its stem with a gentle rocking motion until it seals.
  3. Ear muffs: make sure the cups fully cover both ears. Tuck hair away and adjust the headband for a snug, even seal.
  4. Check the fit: your own voice should sound louder and slightly muffled.
  5. Keep it on: removing protection for even a few minutes in a loud area sharply lowers the protection you get over the day.

Care and replacement

  • Throw away foam plugs once dirty, torn or no longer expanding fully. Never cut them to fit.
  • Wash reusable plugs in mild soapy water and let them air dry.
  • Inspect ear muff cushions often; replace them about every 6 months or sooner if cracked or hard.
  • Check that headbands still hold tension, and never modify a protector.

Hearing FAQs

What is the best hearing protection for construction sites?

For mixed tasks, helmet-mounted ear muffs or SNR 28–33 headband muffs work well because they go on and off quickly. For all-day use in heat, corded foam ear plugs are lighter and cooler.

Ear plugs or ear muffs – which is better?

Both protect well when fitted correctly. Ear muffs are easier to fit and check; ear plugs are lighter, cheaper and work better with glasses and respirators. In extreme noise above about 105 dB, wear both together.

What does SNR mean on ear muffs and ear plugs?

SNR (Single Number Rating) is the European rating for how much noise a protector reduces, in decibels. An SNR 33 muff reduces noise more than an SNR 28 muff. US products use NRR, which is measured differently.

At what noise level do I need hearing protection?

Hearing protection is recommended from 80 dB(A) and should be worn at 85 dB(A) or above over a working day. As a guide, if you have to shout to be heard one metre away, it's too loud.

Can I attach ear muffs to any safety helmet?

Our helmet-mounted ear muffs fit helmets with universal accessory slots, including 3M, MSA, JSP, Bullard, DeWalt and Empiral helmets.

How often should I replace ear plugs and ear muff cushions?

Foam ear plugs are single-use or should be replaced once dirty. Reusable plugs last a few weeks to months with cleaning. Replace ear muff cushions about every six months, or sooner if cracked or hard.

Can ear plugs be used for sleeping, studying or shooting?

Yes. Foam ear plugs are widely used for sleep and concentration. For shooting, use high-SNR ear muffs or plugs and muffs together.

Do you deliver hearing protection across the UAE?

Yes. We offer free shipping within the UAE, including Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi and the Northern Emirates, and supply bulk orders for companies.

Are Bluetooth ear muffs safe to use at work?

Yes, when they are certified to EN 352. Bluetooth models like our OPSMEN range let you take calls without removing protection, and ambient-sound models let you hear alarms and colleagues.
